Better late than never! A quick recap of recent awards for Asian and Asian American filmmakers:

From the SDAFF website:

"Conventioneers" and "Cavite," two films featured at the 6th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival, were honored at the 2006 Independent Spirit Awards on March 4 in Santa Monica. Mora Stephens' "Conventioneers" won the John Cassavetes Award, which is given to the best feature made for under $500,000. IFC/Acura Someone To Watch Award winners Ian Gamazon and Neill Dela Llana will share a $25,000 grant for their work in "Cavite." Both films deftly employed guerilla filmmaking techniques to enhance well-crafted story lines. "Conventioneers" captures the fervor of the 2004 Republican National Convention and "Cavite" takes viewers on a harrowing trip through remote parts of the Philippines.
Another Asian winner at the Spirit Awards was Ang Lee, who won the Best Director Award for "Brokeback Mountain." Lee also won the Best Director Academy Award for the same film.
