6.26.01 -- In her 40-minute digital video documentary "Becoming an Actress in New York," which screened April 25 at the New Asian Filmmakers Series in New York, filmmaker Yunah Hong ("Between the Lines," "Styles Section") profiles three Korean American actresses in their twenties.

Hong interviews the women individually, asking each why she decided to become an actress, surely not the easiest profession to pursue, and how being Korean in America has affected her career path. The actresses discuss these themes further in a rooftop roundtable discussion with the Empire State Building in the background. Hong then showcases each woman in scenes from famous works by Shakespeare, Chekov, and Christopher Hampton. Peppered throughout are candid vignettes of the actresses at auditions or at day-jobs as well as interviews with their agents.

As the featured actresses, Vivian Bang, Esther Chae and Jina Oh are singular individuals with diverse acting styles and goals. Bang is a downtown diva with off-off Broadway sensibilities and a vivacious personality. Her comments are witty, surprising, and sometimes inadvertently poignant. Chae, a classically trained thespian, is proud, accomplished and dedicated to the craft of acting. Her forays into experimental theater like Ping Chong's "Pojagi" are impressive, though bound to make her seem even less commercial to casting agents. Oh is the most steadily employed actress, getting gigs in commercials and industrials with the occasional stage or film production.

"Becoming an Actress" reveals nothing particularly new about an actor's struggle or a performer's dedication and persistence. Instead, the film strives to present its subjects as worthy of being cast in significant roles, despite hurdles like a reactive agent, a racially insensitive industry, and the dearth of good roles.

The film clearly establishes that mainstream venues are not quite ready for these women. While the actresses have been cast in leading roles in the theater, and Ms. Bang did make an appearance in Hal Hartley's feature film "Henry Fool," the women's film and television roles have been limited to ethnically specific and often stereotypical characters like saucy maids or obstreperous Chinese take-out waitresses on shows like HBO's "Sex and the City."

But the film scores its biggest surprises in revealing the condescension that some agents who are supposed to be serving the Asian American acting community have for their clients. One agent in particular has a scathing moment when she typifies Koreans as not being good actors because they're off making too much money running fruit and vegetable stands!

The picture is directed solidly by Hong and shot, edited and scored appropriately by a mostly Asian American crew.

I see there are so many aspiring/struggling actor and actress asking for help and tips.

Well, I'm not a professional-working actor. I am, too, a struggling actor. But here are some tips that may be helpful.

1) Work as Background/Extra Actors; help you understand more about the industry, and a good ground to establish your network. (Networking is very important in the Acting business) You will meet people who can refer you to friends, agents, photographers.... Hints, suggestions...and others.

2) You may not need an agent or be presented by a management agency if you are just starting. Most agents would expect you to have solid acting trainings and/or credits in film/acting projects.

3) Be careful with any agency that asked you to pay a certain amount of money for "Classes" or "Headshots" --- If you are contacted by any agency for an interview, I'd check with Better Business Bureau (bbb.org) first.

4) Look for Audition/Casting notices online (The message board on Asian American Film, Yahoo groups, and others), or local newspaper. (Backstage).

5) You do not need to spend hundreds of dollars on professional headshots if you are looking to do back ground works. Have a friend to take a digital picture of you and print it out on laser printer would work. (There are lots of photography students looking for 'models' to build up their portfolio. Who are willing to take photos for free)

6) There are books that you can check out at local libraries (or buy, if you want to spend money) on Acting Techniques. Taking acting classes is encouraged, but you've got to go to the right places for the right skills. I would suggest that the starting actors to work on some minor projects (film/extras/TV/background/student films), to get familiar with the environment and directions, before attending acting classes.

And of course, I encourage everyone to discuss tips or any acting-related issues on Asian American Film Message Boards. Browsing and reading though past threads will also help in understanding the craft as well as casting notices.

Umm...so yeah. I have no idea how I got on this site, but a bunch of people seems to be posting stuff on here. And posting stuff on something you are unsure about is fun. Uh, I am asian of course. Cambodian to be exact. I've been an extra in two movies already last year. It was good times. I played an asian girl of course in both of the movies. Howdy, I first encountered Asian women when assigned to Chitose, Hokkaido, Japan for 2 years, arriving at age 19. Also was stationed in the Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia (loved Bali, did NOT love Jakarta), Korea, etc. I grew to love the Asian people as I was treated so very well in all the Asian countries I lived in and visited. Went to Europe and been to all 50 United States but have never been treated as well even in my own country. USA. I would love to see Hollywood make more movies with Asians in them. I am almost 67 years old so it will probably NOT happen in my lifetime but we can all hope and pray. When I first retired, I returned to Thailand, met and married the youngest daughter of my Buddhist monk. We moved back to San Antonio Texas in 1996 but are returning to Thailand every year on extended vacations. We are talking about returning to Thailand for good.
