Justin Lin's "Better Luck Tomorrow" picked up by MTV Films

01.27.02-- A little bird tells us that Justin Lin's feature film "Better Luck Tomorrow" has been picked up for distribution by MTV Films after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this month.
"Better Luck Tomorrow" tells the story of a group of overachieving Asian American high school students who drift into a life of crime. The film garnered priceless buzz at Sundance when an older white audience member accused Lin of doing damage to the Asian American community by telling an amoral story of juvenile crime. Film critic Roger Ebert got into the act, defending "Better Luck Tomorrow" at the screening and in his Chicago Sun Times column.
The MTV pickup is the first ever acquisition of an Asian American film at the Sundance Film Festival. The deal was reportedly made for just under $1 million.

i have just seen this movie, and i must say, this has had a major impact on my life. I dont really care that the movie has featured Asian Americans and has destroyed the stereotypes about asians. The movie has influenced me to worry about what is at hand, not the future in which i can do nothing to stop.

First run Asian films; Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Korean, and Thai needed to show at our new Asian movie theater. If you know any agency that carried these type of films please let us know we would love to talk to them

i think that nice now that we're seeing more asian american actors and actress in movies now. before there were practiclly olny blacks and white. i give this film alot of credit but why did they limit it to only a few places it should be nationwide.

A very intense and moving drama. Although the plot was very cleaverly thought through it does not accurately portray teens. the feats the teens in this movie go through are unrealistic because their parents are never around. This is especially true because throughout the whole movie none of the parents worried about their kids staying out till 4 in the morning..never once calling their cell phones or asking where they were studying at. Even parents with straight A children worry; and if one of their parents doesnt worry, i highly doubt all 4 of the cast's would have a similar case. But over all it was a memoriable film that sends a strong message that will stick to the viewer.

I saw the movie "Better Luck Tomorrow" with my wife and her girlfriend. I am a Asia american man (I grew up and went to school here). I enjoy the film because I can relate to this movie. It brings back memories. My wife and her girlfriend are more traditional chinese (I am not sure if this is the correct way of saying it)and they did not enjoy it. I feel that you have to be americanize to like this film.

Amazing...I wish us the best of luck, and a friendly reminder that "We're back on the rise!" This might be our first movie to be recognizes by non-asian organization, but I hope it won't be the last.

I had the pleasure of previewing this awesome film in Los Angeles up on Sunset. I think it is so great to finally see a movie where all main characters are asian american and not playing a stereotypical role. The actors and actresses were brilliant! I hope to see this move out on DVD soon as I would love to own it. Although I think that MTV could have paid a lot more for the movie its a start, any asian american films we can get out into the public the better. Aloha from Hawaii

I was finally privvy to a screening of the long-awaited for and very much-talked about film of late. I applaud everyone who was instrumental in bringing this splendidly provacative, yet altogether jarring, story to life. I agree with John Cho who sums up BLT as an "Asian specific- American general" film and was astounded by the realization that this journey has the capacity of penetrating ethnic stereotypes that have been engendered all too frequently in the past. I look forward to this film, and its impending success, in April.

I recently went to the APA (asian pacific americans...i think)and thats where I first heard about this movie. I have to admit, the whole setting and story of this movie is none like I have ever seen before, talking about real life, insead of fight scenes every 5 minutes. I have to admire the director, working with next to nothing budget, and still able to produce a film of this quality. I am deffineity going to see it, if it ever comes out in Michigan. Good job guys! great effort.

I was fortunate enough to see BLT at the Silverlake Film Festival. I was estactic at the news that it will be released this March 2003. The wonderful thing about this film is that it is not race specific. Watch the film with your eyes closed and you would never guess the characters were of asian american decent. That is the genius of this film. The question is whether or not Hollywood, and the general public can recognize this poignant fact. I hope you and others reading this post will spread the word and invest in making BLT a success. The only way to get the attention of Hollywood is with MONEY. Your dollars are the only way to get Asian american faces known in Hollywood. Show them asian amerians have a marketable base by using your dollars to prove it!

i think this is revolutionary for us asian americans. My friends and I have been waiting for a movie like this for a long time. It's good know that there's a movie out there that asian americans like us can relate to. No more kung fu fighting, or book worm stereotypes. Just exposes it raw the way it should of always been. I give it up for all the individuals that put in work for this. For having the balls to make a film despite what all these white boys think.

BLT is by far, the most accurate portrayl of young asian american teens seen on film thus far. I thought it was an incredibly intelligent film with a well-written script. Each of the actors carried their characters well, making the story even more believable. I recalled my days in high school, having grown up in the San Fernando Valley and could completely relate to the story and each of the characters. Justin Lin has succeeded in telling a story that is compelling to both asian americans and non-asian americans.
