Sony Pictures Classics to distribute Alice Wu's "Saving Face"

09.15 - Posted by Editor

Breaking news from AAF correspondent Karin Chien:

Following the premiere of her feature film debut "Saving Face" on September 12 at the Toronto International Film Festival, writer/director Alice Wu announced that Sony Pictures Classics had come on board the night before to distribute the film. Wu was joined by her principal cast, Joan Chen, Michelle Krusiec and Lynne Chen at the sold-out screening. "Saving Face" is an Asian American lesbian romantic comedy, and one of only two American films in the festival's Discovery section, which features new directors. The film was produced by Will Smith's production company Overbrook Entertainment, Forensic Films and Greenestreet Films, and financed by Columbia Tri-Star, and was filmed in New York City last October. Prior to directing "Saving Face," Wu directed the short film "Trick or Treat."

Being a creative writer . I found Alice Wu’s movie “ saving face’’ to be very touching , warm and well made. You don’t find movies like that . The ones that make you think and see things from the other side. Excellent !

The film is really a lot of fun. Despite good humour it has serious social issues.

I saw Saving Face with my lesbian friend on the 28th, it started playing in on the 27th in 2 theaters in NYC, still playing~~~. The stigma, lesbianism, single-parent/divorce, younger mother & much younger man, and so on...It is witty & culturally stereotyped (doctor, artist, stereotypes are true at a certain level), it shows the dynamics of a Chinese American family/community, a must-see! And you won't regret!

The only wish i had after the movie is i would like to see some broad social influences mentioned, from a sociological perspective...

It's time to talk about homosexuality in my community! I've been waiting for so long...

Alice Wu’s short “Trick or Treat” is wonderful, so I can’t wait to see “Saving Face”. ToT was sweet and funny without ever being at all pat or cloying, which is often what comes with sweet and funny. It’s done instead with warmth and a kind intelligence that I’m eager to see at work in what will not be just another Mandarin/English lesbian family comedy.

Thanks! Correction made. My bad -- not enough sleep last night, clearly.
