Asian Americans experience an equally high, if not higher rate of mental
illness, than the general population, but are one-fourth as likely to
seek help. Mental health brings with it stigmas and hidden communities
within communities.

This panel will discuss the work of some of the research essays included
in the groundbreaking new book released by NYU's Center for the Study of
Asian American Health, Asian American Communities and Health, which
includes research on mental health in the Asian American population with
the elderly and LGBT Asian American communities. The panel will open
with a preview clip from the documentary film, "Can," a work-in-progress
by Pearl J. Park, which follows Can Truong, a war refugee who was among
the millions of boat people who fled Vietnam in the 1970's, was a model
student, and aspiring to become a doctor when he was diagnosed with
depression and bipolar disorder.

The Asian American population is growing at a faster pace than other
large racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Its growth is
expected to triple between now and 2050 when Asian Americans will
constitute 8% of the U.S. population. The community also has unique
healthcare needs.

Panelists:

Irene Chung, PhD, Associate Professor and Chair, Casework Curriculum,
Hunter College School of Social Work

Sel J. Hwahng, PhD, Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race, Columbia
University

Duy Nguyen, MSW, PhD, Assistant Professor, Silver School of Social Work, NYU

Pearl J. Park, Producer/Director of the documentary film-in-progress
"Can" (amongourkin.org.)

Tazuko Shibuzawa, MSW, PhD, Associate Professor of Social Work, NYU

Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU

Free and open to the public. RSVP IMMEDIATELY!

Please join us for a special conversation with filmmaker David Boyle of "White on Rice" and Producer Mynette Louie of "Children of Invention," moderated by Jeff Yang, editor of Secret Identities: The Asian American Superhero Anthology and former aMagazine founding editor. We will get sneak previews of clips of the films, which are both opening in New York City on March 12th. The filmmakers will discuss Asian Americans in film, writing and representation, and the creation of their films.

"White on Rice"
40-year-old Jimmy is growing up, or at least he's getting older. While mooching the upper bunk of his ten-year-old nephew's bed, he enjoys the never-ending generosity of his sister Aiko, and dodges the wrath of his impatient brother-in-law Tak. He thinks that if only he could get married all his problems would be solved. But when he falls head over heels for Tak's niece things only go from bad to worse.

"White on Rice" won the 2009 San Diego Asian Film Festival Audience Award and the 2009 VC FilmFest - Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival Jury Prize for both Acting - New Talent to Watch for Justin Kwong and for Best Screenplay for Dave Boyle and Joel Clark.

"Children of Invention"
After being evicted, hardworking single mom Elaine Cheng (Cindy Cheung, Lady in the Water) tries to maintain a normal life for her children, Raymond and Tina. Elaine juggles a number of jobs, including working for a questionable pyramid scheme. When Elaine doesn't return home one night, nobody knows the kids are home alone, and they are left to fend for themselves. As the days pass, Raymond, a budding inventor, realizes he needs to come up with a plan to take care of his little sister.

"Children of Invention" premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, screened at over 40 film festivals, and won 15 festival awards including: Grand Jury Prizes at the 2009 Newport International Film Festival, Independent Film Festival Boston, Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, San Diego Asian Film Festival, and Ojai-Ventura Film Festival.

Special Live Events (90 mins)
SAT 03/13 1:00pm,
VIZ Cinema, $8

This workshop presents a rare opportunity to interface directly with leading Asian American filmmakers and industry professionals. Led by producer Karin Chien (THE MOTEL, UNDOING, ROBOT STORIES) and featuring acclaimed editor and documentary filmmaker Ruby Yang (BLOOD OF YINGZHOU DISTRICT), and celebrated actress Tamlyn Tomita (THE JOY LUCK CLUB) this intimate session will create an interactive mentoring environment where the focus will be on guiding participants through individual and project specific challenges. Mentors will reveal how they started out in the business and talk honestly about the daily realities of working in the industry. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions about their own projects, whether they are related to financing, distribution, production, or even problems in the edit. Both narrative and documentary projects will be discussed. Filmmakers, professionals of all levels and the general public are welcome to attend and participate in this insider's view of how independent films are made. This workshop is part of a new mentoring initiative designed to grow the Asian American industry from within and is funded in part by the Academy Foundation. Filmmakers interested in having their projects workshopped and discussed at this session should send:

1. One-sentence bi of themselves
2. One-paragraph description of their project
3. Up to three questions related to their project

Legendary documentary filmmaker and educator Loni Ding passed away on February 20 in Berkeley, California. A number of her colleagues and students have already posted beautiful tributes online. A few excerpts (please click on the names below to read the writers' full posts):

Barbara Abrash:
Working with Loni over the years, I began to think of her as a kind of warrior - always going into action for what she believed in. So I asked her how she thought of herself. She was, she said, still the little girl shuttling between her parents' herbal medicine shops - one in San Francisco's Chinatown, the other downtown - on the trolley. Going between two worlds with wide-open eyes, registering the faces, gestures, and scenes all around her. A warrior with open eyes and and open mind - that's how I will remember Loni.
huijeong:
... the first time I met Loni Ding (and pretty much every time I saw her after then), I thought, "Loni Ding is genius and crazy!" Crazy in the best way of course! She embodied life. Loni Ding had so much vibrant spunkiness to her. She knew what she wanted and got it. She knew what she wanted from us as well and had no problem letting us know. Her outlook, her art, and her way of being complexified for me what it could mean to be Asian American.
Boliano 52:
My time in Loni's class was a defining moment in finding my voice, my self.
Oliver Wang:
I can't even try to guess how many documentarians Loni trained at Berkeley during her many years there; it's safe to say however that she's been one of the giants in the field, a pioneer in every sense of the word.
Moriah Ulinskas:
I remember clearly the day I overheard someone saying to my supervisor that they needed an assistant on a film project. I peered over the divider, told the small smiling woman on the other side that I was interested, and printed my resume on the spot. The next day I rode the bus up Van Ness Avenue and walked the hill to her Washington Street home where I would soon be schooled in social documentary, Asian American history, and how to butcher a chicken.
