Filmmaker Rod Pulido Self Distributes First Feature Film
Los Angeles, CA - THE FLIP SIDE - A FILM BY ROD PULIDO was a huge hit at the Sundance 2001 Film Festival in Park City. On November 8, this groundbreaking and critically acclaimed independent film will begin its Los Angeles and Southern California exclusive run at five theaters throughout the Southland with a nationwide city-by-city self distribution release to follow. THE FLIP SIDE made history at the Sundance Film Festival 2001 when its sold-out world premiere screenings became the first Filipino American feature to be screened at the festival - marking a new voice coming from the independent film front.
THE FLIP SIDE is comedic look into the lives of The Delacruz Family - a humble, yet vibrant Filipino American family living in the suburbs of Southern California, whose children comically grapple with finding their place in America. Elder son Darius Delacruz (VERWIN GATPANDAN) is on a mission. Fresh from his first year at college where his Filipino roots were awakend, he spends the whole summer trying to get his family to embrace their Filipino culture. Darius walks around wearing only a tribal loincloth, while encouraging his family to speak Tagalog, their native language. Everyone thinks he’s crazy.
Enter Darius' fast-talking brother, Davis (JOSE SAENZ), who is more into basketball and rap music, and who fully embraces hip-hop culture as his own. Despite his short stature, Davis continuously tries to dunk a basketball on a "ten foot NBA regulation basketball rim" with hilarious results!
Darius' scheming sister, Marivic (RONALEE PAR) is only into her looks and secretly spends time with her white boyfriend, while working all summer long in order to save up for a certain surgical procedure that will shock the entire family, and make her feel more accepted. Filled with sharp dialogue and unexpected twists, THE FLIP SIDE takes a satirical look at race and identity and offers a fresh, new perspective on family and sibling rivalry.
"I wanted to make a film that showed the Filipino American side of our society (my side) and our daily dealings with trying to fit in and assimilate," states filmmaker Pulido, ex-break dancer turned film director. "So often people think of the world and the US in just black and white - but we Filipino Americans are here, too. Diversity is not just black and white, it’s brown, too and then some."
In staying true to the indie spirit, THE FLIP SIDE is being self distributed by director ROD PULIDO and his Puro Pinoy Productions and will be released in Los Angeles at the following theaters on November 8, 2002:
Laemmle Sunset 5 - West Hollywood; Mann Glendale Exchange 10 - Glendale; Edwards Cerritos 10 Town Center - Cerritos; Regal Cinemas Avenue 13 - Rolling Hills Estates; and Edwards University Town Center 6 - Irvine.
The film is 80 minutes in length, not rated (could be PG), and in English. For more information log on to the website at www.flipsidemovie.com
