Not Alone still
Still from "Not Alone" by Dayne Tanioka

Not Written In Stone (But Possibly Written While Stoned)
By Ben Kim, co-founder of the Foundation for Asian American Independent Media (FAAIM)

     Terminal USA
(Jon Moritsugu, 1994) 54 min.
Distributed by
NAATA
The definitive midnight movie of Asian American cinema. I guest lecture just so I can show this to impressionable undergrads. "I can't believe they still think I'm a Chink. I'm a Jap!" (Sadly, I've never been able to take Ken Narasaki or Sharon Omi seriously in any subsequent roles - but enough about MY problems...)

Giant Metal Insects
(Cliff Son, 1992) 18 min.
The dread within sexual desire - not just acknowledged, but nailed. (Cliff's debut feature
Helium bows later this year.)

Super-Cute Japanese Tourist Bounty Hunters
(Dayne Tanioka, 1996) 5 min.
Not Alone
(Dayne Tanioka, 1998) 8 min.
Though the send-up is the simplest of the comedic arts (e.g.
The Penny Marshall Project - gotcha, Greg!), this Dayne guy is a born slayer. Keep an eye on him!

Shopping For Fangs
(Justin Lin's half (sorry, Quentin Lee), 1997) 90 min.
Distributed by
Margin Films
Lycanthropy as metaphor for violently resurgent AsAm male sexuality -- why, of course. Whither the great Radmar Jao?

Lovestory
(Ayana Osada, 1997) 20 min.
Quicktime file of the film downloadable from
Sneaker Productions
In a better world, they wouldn't let anyone graduate from film school unless they could tell a story visually. And this tale of a bizarre love triangle -- beautifully shot, dialogue-free -- would be a required text.

Ben Kim sleeps

Ben Kim is a co-founder of the Foundation for Asian American Independent Media (FAAIM), which presents the Chicago Asian American Showcase, a film/arts festival, March 31 - April 8, 2000.
Ben adds: "This list does NOT shill for this year's Showcase programming (though believe me, I was tempted)."
